SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs make quick work of G-R

LE GRAND – Taylor Fricke hit a grand slam in the second game of an NICL West Division doubleheader as the Class 3A No. 3 East Marshall softball team swept Gladbrook-Reinbeck 10-0 in five innings and 12-0 in four.

Fricke drove in seven runs of the team’s 22 runs in the conference sweep. Mariah Fritz struck out seven in a two-hitter pitching performance in the opener, while Haley Long tossed a two-hitter with two strikeouts in the nightcap.

Ashley Allen and Madisen Hinegardner had two RBIs apiece in the first game, and Hinegardner drove in four more with two hits in the second game.

Maci Fritz had three hits in game two for the Mustangs (7-3, 6-1), who visit league rival BCLUW tonight.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck fell to 0-7 overall and league play.

Callaway’s no-no leads Comet sweep

CONRAD – The BCLUW softball team swept South Hardin in NICL West play Wednesday, topping the visiting Tigers 3-0 and 8-0.

Nicolette Simpson struck out 17 in a one-hitter to start the night, and Olivia Callaway completed the sweep with a no-hitter in game two. Callaway struck out eight and walked one in the win.

Kayla Benjamin and Sara Sharp accounted for the Comets’ only hits in the opener against Alaina Lake. Kate Goecke drove in a run.

Callaway backed her no-hitter in the circle with a 2-for-4 night at the plate that included a double and two RBIs. Becca Steckelberg, Nicole Lutes, Simpson and Benjamin added singles. Mikayla Fisher took the loss for the Tigers (2-5, 2-5). BCLUW (8-1, 7-0) hosts East Marshall tonight.

Mannan gets GMG’s only hit in defeat

GREEN MOUNTAIN – Peyton Mannan came up with the lone GMG hit as the Wolverine softball team suffered a 12-0, five-inning loss to Dunkerton in Iowa Star Conference play Wednesday.

Haley Stahl surrendered just four earned runs in the circle for GMG (0-3, 0-3), allowing four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Wolverines are back at home Friday against Tripoli.

West Marshall takes two from Spartans

STATE CENTER – Eighth-graders Grace Porter and Brooke Snider picked up a pair of pitching wins as the West Marshall softball team stopped Grundy Center 4-2 and 12-4 in an NICL West Division doubleheader Wednesday.

Katie Price and Georgia Porter both had two hits in the opening game, while Karis Gibbs, Shelby Larsen, Nicole Riemenschneider and Price had two hits apiece in game two.

Gibbs drove in four runs on the night, getting a double in the second game for the Trojans (3-7, 3-4). Snider doubled and scored three times in the nightcap.

No statistics were reported for Grundy Center (0-7, 0-7).

Redhawks edged by NE Hamilton

BLAIRSBURG – Logan Seiser struck out nine in a complete-game pitching performance, helping Northeast Hamilton hold off North Tama 2-1 in an Iowa Star Conference baseball contest Wednesday night.

The host Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, while North Tama notched its lone run in the fourth.

Brandon Kaufman, North Tama’s lone senior, went the distance on the mound in the loss. He allowed four hits and two earned runs with a walk and five strikeouts.

Cameron Hoeg was 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Brody Hulme and Cael Kopriva both went 1-for-2.

The Redhawks host Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action. North Tama’s round-robin tournament with North-Linn and Iowa Valley starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.

West Marshall baseball blanked by Carlisle

CARLISLE – The West Marshall baseball team managed just two hits in a 6-0 loss to non-conference foe Carlisle on Wednesday night.

The Trojans struck out 14 times in the loss as Carlisle (2-5) ended a five-game skid.

Dylan Petermeier and Chandler Sponseller accounted for West Marshall’s only hits. Parker Hulbert took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings pitched. Sponseller went the final 2 1/3 frames, striking out two.

The Trojans (4-6) travel to face South Hardin tonight in an NICL West Division battle in Eldora.
