Local local ice cream parlor set to reopen

A well-known Marshalltown ice cream parlor will open its doors again.

The Tasty Freeze, 1803 S. Center St., has been closed since 2012 but will reopen by the end of the month after getting a facelift.

“We are really trying to clean it up and keep the nostalgia,” said Chris Bacon, owner. “We’re going to make it look brighter and newer looking. It’s a 60-year-old building so it was time.”

The business will also have a new name.

“It’s going to open as The Freeze,” Bacon said. “The Tasty Freeze franchise itself is down to maybe 50 stores U.S. wide and they don’t really supply many products any more … everybody remembers it as kind of The Freeze so that’s what we are going to call it.”

However the menu will remain the same.

“We’re going to go back to the old, very simple menu- foot-long hot dogs, chili dogs and ice cream products,” Bacon said. “It’s what everyone remembers it as.”

The Tasty Freeze has been a Marshalltown establishment and in the Bacon family since 1960. In 1997, Bacon’s father decided to sell on rent-to-own terms over a 15-year period.

In the end, the person trying to buy it was unable to complete his contract. Bacon’s father passed away at 98 last May.

“We had a legal contract to clear out,” Bacon said. “It was just a combination of a couple of things that wouldn’t allow us to get it back open.”

Bacon said he hopes to have it open by June 26 or 27.
