MHS duo nets preliminary win at co-ed state tennis

ANKENY – The Marshalltown pair of Megan Riemenschneider and Kalei Platt picked up a straight-set victory on Tuesday at the Class 2A Co-Ed State Tennis Tournament.

Platt, a senior, and the junior Riemenschneider scored a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Leah Greteman and Robby Steffes of Kuemper Catholic in the preliminary round.

The Bobcat duo was dropped in the round of 32, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Syd Connolly and Jeff Teng of Dubuque Hempstead. Teng was a 2A state singles qualifier for the Mustangs.

The Marshalltown pair of Jenna Jaeckel and Kade Vopava did not have to play a preliminary match, but the duo was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Morgan Steff and Jiwei Sun, also of Dubuque Hempstead.

Both Hempstead pairings were defeated in the second round.

West Des Moines Valley’s Chloe Jefferies and Anders Jensen scored a 6-4, 6-2 win over Iowa City West’s Abby Jans and Trent Schneider in the championship match.

In Class 1A, the Waterloo Columbus squad of Lauren McManus and Connor Barnard defeated Haley Resnick and Jimmy Huiskamp of Davenport Assumption.
