PREP SOFTBALL: Wolverines held to two hits in defeat

CLARKSVILLE – The GMG softball team endured its fourth straight loss on Wednesday night, falling to Iowa Star Conference foe Clarksville 10-0 in five innings.

The host Indians (1-5, 1-4) got their first win of the year thanks to an eight-run outburst in the second inning.

GMG (1-7, 0-6) finished with just two hits in the loss. Eve Gallentine had both of them. Only three of Clarksville’s 10 runs came earned to Wolverines pitcher Haley Stahl, who struck out four.

The Wolverines return home to entertain North Tama in league play Friday.

West Marshall 18, Van Meter 6

VAN METER – Karis Gibbs drove in six runs as the West Marshall softball squad topped Van Meter 18-6 Wednesday, thanks in great part to an 11-run seventh inning.

GLADBROOK – Gladbrook-Reinbeck got its first win of the season on Tuesday night by taking the opening game of an NICL West Division doubleheader against West Marshall, 12-8. The Trojans (6-9, 5-5) held on to take the second game, 6-5.

The Rebels (1-11, 1-9) scored a season-high 12 runs in the opener behind 14 hits. Hayley Weber was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Lauren Gauthier, Sasha Nagle and Madison White had two hits each. Winning pitcher Katy Thompson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Hanna Christopher contributed a double and an RBI.

Thompson struck out five and walked four, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits.

Weber was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead G-R offensively in the nightcap. Sadie Calahan was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Christopher scored twice in the loss. White allowed four earned runs in defeat, surrendering six hits and a walk while striking out four.
