‘Lego Movie’ opens outdoor film series

It has now become a summer tradition in Marshalltown and it returns Saturday night.

Movies in the Park will open its first of three free movies this summer with a showing of “The Lego Movie” at dusk Saturday at the South Sixth Street softball complex.

It is run by Parks and Recreation and sponsored by Fauna Nord, a realtor with Coldwell Banker. Other movies shown this summer will be “Saving Mr. Banks” on July 12 and “The Blind Side” on Aug. 16.

“I think we’ve got a great slate of movies this summer,” said Chad Weir of Parks and Recreation.

Weir said “The Lego Movie” is the perfect movie to start off the summer series.

“It’s a really good movie for the whole family,” Weir said.

The movies start at dusk and concessions will be for sale at the event.

Movies in the Park started in 2012 with the screening of “Field of Dreams” and has been a popular event for those wanting to enjoy the outdoors and a movie ever since.

“We’ve had two good summers,” Weir said. “I think people have enjoyed it and want it to continue.”
