Cougars 2-2 at Roland-Story tourney

ROLAND – Ashley Sicard belted her ninth and 10th home runs of the season as the Class 1A No. 4-ranked AGWSR softball team went 2-2 at the Roland Kiwanis Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Sicard homered and drove in three runs during the team’s opening 9-4 win over 3A No. 13 Mount Vernon. Madi Fryslie was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, while Morgan Rose was 2-for-3 with one run driven in. Jami Johnson was 1-for-1 with a walk and her courtesy runner Anna Jaspers scored twice.

Sicard scattered six hits and two walks while striking out two in the win.

Against Perry, Sicard allowed six hits and seven walks in a 5-2 loss. She struck out nine and had two of the Cougars’ seven singles. Rose went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Fryslie, Olivia Ingledue and Maddie Deters each added hits.

Julie Diw hit a two-run homer in the first for the Bluejays and Kylie Brandt had a two-run double in the fifth. Emma Olejniczak struck out eight and walked one for the win.

Sicard hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning to spark AGWSR (16-5) past South Hamilton in the Cougars’ tournament finale. She also struck out five and walked one, scattering seven hits.

Johnson doubled and scored on a passed ball in the fourth to give AGWSR a 2-1 lead, and Ingledue singled and scored on a wild pitch for an insurance run in the seventh.

The Cougars go to Grundy Center for an NICL West Division doubleheader tonight.
