Rebel baseball wins own tournament

REINBECK – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team captured its own tournament title on Saturday by beating both Iowa Valley and Turkey Valley.

The Rebels (12-4) racked up 17 hits, including seven doubles, in a 13-0 win over Iowa Valley (8-5). Phillip Zimmerman finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, while Camden Kickbush, Cameron Murphy, Bryce Ehlers, Logan Flamme and Joe Smoldt had two hits apiece. Smoldt drove in four runs in support of his own five-hit shutout. He struck out four and walked two.

G-R erased Turkey Valley’s early 1-0 lead with a seven-run fifth. Jeff Tscherter, Zach Pierce and Marco Barron had the Rebels’ only hits, each driving in a run. Brady Kuehl earned the win on the mound, scattering six hits and one walk. He struck out three.

In the tournament’s other game, Turkey Valley (11-7) beat Iowa Valley 9-1 behind Justin Izer’s two-hitter. Kyle Reicks homered for the Trojans.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts South Tama for an NICL West Division doubleheader tonight starting at 5:30 p.m.
