Trojans tackle Tigers for NICL West sweep

STATE CENTER – West Marshall eighth-grader Alex Dickey doubled his scoreless innings streak with 4 2/3 frames of relief work and the Trojans got the clutch hits they needed to sweep South Hardin in Tuesday’s NICL West Division doubleheader.

After getting rained out on Monday, the two teams returned to action in the top of the third inning of the opening game. Dickey took over for starter Nolan Sinning and allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out five. Sinning struck out three, walked one and gave up three hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Jared Johnson had an RBI single and Matt Van Metre’s two-run triple in the sixth provided the Trojans with enough insurance. Ty Cook took the loss for South Hardin, allowing just five hits.

The visiting Tigers (1-12, 1-12) led 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth in the second game before West Marshall rallied for the go-ahead runs.

Dylan Petermeier’s squeeze bunt plated pinch-runner Beau Coberley, and Alex Billman scored on Sinning’s two-out single for the eventual game-winning run.

Sinning finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Billman was 2-for-3 in support of Ross Randall. The freshman picked up his first win of the season, allowing five hits and one earned run while going the distance. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

Sam Shindelar was saddled with the loss for South Hardin.

West Marshall (12-10, 8-6) hosts South Tama on Thursday night before playing in a four-team tournament at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo on Saturday. The Trojans open against West Fork at 11:30 a.m., while Winfield-Mt. Union and West Bend-Mallard follow at 1:30 p.m. The consolation game is at 3:30 p.m. and the title game at approximately 5:30 p.m.
