Pairings set for 1A/2A postseason

The pairings for the Class 1A and 2A high school baseball playoffs were released on Wednesday.

In Class 2A, East Marshall, West Marshall and South Hardin were placed on the same side of the bracket in District 5.

The Trojans (15-11) and Tigers (2-14) will face off in a first-round game on July 12 at 7 p.m. in Story City. Iowa Falls-Alden (5-11) and South Hamilton (3-16) also are in Story City that night and will open the doubleheader at 5 p.m.

East Marshall (21-6) received a first-round bye and will play the West Marshall-South Hardin winner in Story City on July 15 at 5 p.m. Story City also will be the host of the late game on that night as host and No. 5 ranked Roland-Story (19-9) will face either Iowa Falls-Alden or South Hamilton at 7 p.m.

The two semifinal winners will meet in Story City on July 19 at 7 p.m. and the winner of District 5 will head to Marshalltown for the Substate 3 final on July 22.

The District 5 winner will take on the District 6 winner in that contest and potential opponents include Dike-New Hartford, Waterloo Columbus Catholic, Hudson, Hampton-Dumont, Aplington-Parkersburg and Union Community.

The other area teams will play in either Class 1A District 5 or District 6.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Grundy Center, AGWSR and BCLUW all will play out of District 5 and look to take down the favorite and 10th ranked Janesville in the district final.

AGWSR could get the first crack at Janesville (16-3) as the Cougars (6-14) will meet Nashua-Plainfield at Janesville on July 15 at 5 p.m. Janesville plays the late game on that night against either North Butler or Clarksville and the winners will face off in Janesville at 7 p.m. on July 17.

The other first-round doubleheader will be in Grundy Center on July 15. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (15-6) and Northeast Hamilton (5-9) square off first at 5 p.m. and then host Grundy Center (8-13) takes on NICL West Division rival BCLUW (5-13) at 7 p.m. Those two winners will meet in Grundy Center at 7 p.m. on July 17 and the district final also is in Grundy Center on July 19.

The favorite to come out of District 6 will be No. 8 BGM. The Bears (15-2) have a first-round bye after Meskwaki Settlement School forfeited the rest of its season last month.

BGM will meet either GMG (11-7) or HLV (4-12) in the district semifinals. GMG and HLV will play in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. on July 15.

That winner meets host BGM on the same field at 7 p.m. on July 17.

Over on the other side of the bracket, Iowa Valley takes on Colo-NESCO and North Tama faces Belle Plaine in a quarterfinal doubleheader in Traer.

Iowa Valley (11-6) meets Colo-NESCO (6-14) at 5 p.m. July 15, while the host Redhawks (10-10) take on Belle Plaine (7-10) at 7 p.m. Those two winners also play in Traer at 7 p.m. July 17.

The district final will be in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. on July 19 and the District 5 and District 6 champions play in the Substate 3 final in Traer on July 22.
