SPORTS SHORTS: Holtz homers, allows 2 hits in STC win
GRUNDY CENTER – South Tama County senior Samantha Holtz powered the Trojan offense with her bat and shut down the Grundy Center attack in the circle Thursday in an NICL West Division game here.
Holtz homered at the plate and allowed just two hits as the starting pitcher as South Tama County blanked Grundy Center, 11-0. The Trojans got nine hits at the dish and took advantage of five Spartan errors.
Holtz also struck out two and walked just one in earning the win. She blasted a solo home run in the fourth and had two hits and two RBIs total in the game.
Dani Stubbs also had two hits and three RBIs and Trisha Walz chipped in two hits, including a double, and four RBIs for the Trojans (11-17, 10-9).
Kayla Matthews took the loss for Grundy Center (4-22, 4-16), allowing nine runs – five earned – on 10 hits in four innings. Harper Wells and Cearra Aguon each had a hit in the loss.
Next up for Grundy Center is the postseason as the Spartans will head to Dike-New Hartford at 7 p.m. Monday, while South Tama travels to North Tama on Monday and opens the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday at No. 2 East Marshall.
North Tama scores last in win over C-N
TRAER – Neither North Tama or Colo-NESCO put up a crooked number in their Iowa Star Conference battle on Thursday, but the Redhawks escaped with a home victory after plating the final run of the game in the last half of the fifth inning and beat the Royals 3-2.
Colo-NESCO scored first and tied the game with another run in the fifth before ending its three-game win streak with a narrow loss.
Brady Stoeffler had a hit and scored a run at the plate and also took the loss on the mound after allowing two earned runs on eight hits and walking three and striking out three in six innings.
Taylor Hill, Christian Montgomery and Matthew Hill each had a hit and Mark Frohwein walked and scored the Royals’ other run.
Colo-NESCO (6-16) next plays at BCLUW on Tuesday.
No statistics were available for North Tama at press time.
BCLUW to hold boys basketball camp
CONRAD – New BCLUW boy’s basketball coach Larry McNutt has set the dates for the Comets’ annual camp and it will take place July 14-16 this year.
The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon and is for boys entering second through eighth grade.
A BCLUW coach will give up a special, motivational and educational speech every day, and there also will be about 7 1/2 hours of basketball instruction in the three days. Each camper receives a T-shirt, a camp booklet and camp awards also will be given out.
