School board approves raises for secretaries

The Marshalltown School Board approved a 4 percent salary package increase for the district’s 25 secretaries for the 2014-15 school year at its meeting Monday. This is in line with the raises received by other support staff groups in the district.

“It really does mirror what we’ve done for support staff as a whole,” said Kevin Posekany, business manager for the district.

In other action, the board approved three construction projects as substantially complete at the meeting including the Miller Middle School classroom addition, the Support Services Center remodel and the technology bid for the Support Services Center.

The issue of forming a new athletic conference with the Des Moines Public Schools and Indianola and Ottumwa was pulled from the agenda. Board President Sherm Welker said the Des Moines schools are now not seeking to form a new conference next year, so it made sense to not waste time having the board discuss it.

“The issue is dead,” Welker said.

Matt Nevins, an elementary teacher at Anson, addressed the board during public comment asking the board to start discussions to reinstate the early retirement incentive program for staff.

The next regular meeting of the board will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 in school district offices.
