Demolition of former Sonic building underway

A much awaited Dunkin’ Donuts store in Marshalltown became closer to reality Tuesday, when crews began demolition of the former Sonic restaurant at 10 Lafrentz Lane.

Equally pleased that the project has taken a major step forward is Jeff Kelderman of Johnston, who, with sister Lori Kelderman High of Atlanta, are the Marshalltown store franchisees.

“We are excited to be getting the construction process started in Marshalltown and look forward to bringing Dunkin Donuts to the Lafrentz Lane location along with another national retail brand that will be occupying the south end of the building,” said Kelderman. “We have a middle bay with approximately 1,300 square feet of space still available for lease.”

The three-store building will be 5,300 square feet.

The brother sister team have opened Dunkin’ Donuts stores in Ames and Ankeny, and opened a store near the Iowa State Fairgrounds July 4.

The Marshalltown Dunkin’ Donuts will employ 35 people, a combination of full-time and part-time positions, Kelderman said.

The business will offer regular and decaffeinated coffees, cappuccino, espresso and lattes among other beverages.

It has expanded its offerings to include frozen and iced beverages, a full bakery assortment including bagels and muffins, breakfast and bakery sandwiches, hash browns and buttermilk biscuits, among other products.

Dunkin’ Donuts has nearly 11,000 restaurants in 33 countries. At the end of 2013, Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. had franchisee-reported sales of approximately $9.3 billion.
