Local Mullet Man headed back to fair

John Beaty said he was robbed when he didn’t win the best mullet contest at the Iowa State Fair in 2011. He’s back this year with the goal to win it.

The 49-year-old Marshalltown resident will put his coiffed curls on the line at 1 p.m. Sunday on the Bud Light Stage at the fair.

“People always say they love my mullet,” Beaty said.

Beaty realized when he lost in 2011 that he needs to have a whole 1980s costume and not just a mullet and that’s his plan for Sunday.

“I need a little bit more flair,” he said.

The state fair has not held the contest since 2011 and Beaty said the Mullet Nation has demanded that it come back.

“The Mullet Nation came on an uproar,” Beaty said. “Maybe someone contacted a congressman.”

Beaty has always said the mullet is more than just a hairstyle.

“It’s not just a hairdo, it’s a lifestyle,” Beaty said. “You’ve got to live like you are in the 80s.”

For Beaty, living like he’s in the 80s means listening to bands like Def Leppard, KISS and REO Speedwagon.

The Meskwaki Casino poker dealer hopes for as much support as he can get and already has a group of 12 family and friends to root him on Sunday.

“I think I’ve got a really good shot,” he said.
