VFW hosting garage sale

From a flat screen television to a wheel chair lift to a kitchen sink, that and more is available at the local Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 839 garage sale at 107 E. Meadow Lane, Saturday.

It is the first time in five years the VFW has hosted a garage sale, said Richard Drummer of Marshalltown, who is helping coordinate the event with other volunteers.

The sale is timely due to a major expense the post recently incurred.

It committed to have a contractor pave a 14-foot area on a portion of its property to prevent water from entering the organization’s building, said Larry Larson, post commander.

“Last spring we had a lot of water enter under the building,” he said. “We spent $1,000 to have carpet dried out on that side (west) of the building.”

Larson and volunteers were busy this week unloading donated items and arranging them for placement on tables for the big sale.

“We will have a lot of items, but not clothes,” Larson said.

Baked goods will also be available at the sale which is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
