Bobcats net another win with sweep of DM North
DES MOINES – Two matches, two victories, no games allowed.
The Marshalltown volleyball team marched to its second consecutive sweep in as many nights, opening the season 2-0 after Tuesday’s trouncing of Des Moines North.
The Bobcats, who defeated Pella Christian in three sets in Monday’s opener, toppled the Polar Bears 25-10, 25-2, 25-12.
MHS served 71-for-73 with a whopping 14 aces while hitting at a 47.9 percent efficiency rate. Junior Rachel Whaley and freshman Reagan Mazour led the Bobcats with 14 kills apiece, both hitting at a .545 clip.
Morgan Finch served 31-for-31 with six aces, Leiah Paustian piled up 38 assists and Jasmine Scott posted five blocks in a dominant performance for Marshalltown.
“Starting out the girls didn’t really know how hard we had to play, so we did have a few too many errors in the early going,” said MHS coach Terri Westendorf. “But once that happened they got back into it and put the pedal to the metal.
“It was definitely a game that we struggled to keep our intensity up, but we had some really good moments.”
Scott added seven kills to her team-high five blocks, while Whaley led with six digs and Finch had five. Tabby Steffensen stepped in to serve 12-for-12 with one ace, while Lexi Gimbel was 6-for-6 with three aces.
The Bobcats are off for a week before playing their “home” opener next Tuesday. MHS hosts Class 5A No. 7 Waukee at Marshalltown Community College’s Student Activity Center.
